NFL investigates official's exchange with Cardinals tight end McBride
The NFL is reviewing an incident in which line judge Jeff Seeman appears to have used profanity toward Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during the Cardinals' 36-24 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, in East Rutherford, N.J. The exchange occurred with just under five minutes left after officials called no penalty on a third-and-2 play in which Giants defender Dru Phillips contacted McBride before the ball arrived from Jacoby Brissett. Broadcast cameras captured the official appearing to swear; McBride pointed toward the camera afterward. Arizona punted, and Deonte Banks later intercepted Brissett and returned it for a touchdown as time expired. McBride finished with 7 catches for 31 yards. NFLPA executive director JC Tretter said the behavior is unacceptable, that players are held accountable when roles are reversed, and that the union expects the same standard for officials. League spokesperson Brian McCarthy told the Associated Press the NFL is looking into the situation; Adam Schefter reported the league said it is reviewing. The NFL Referees Association did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Contested: none on the core sequence, score, or that a review is underway. Unresolved is whether Seeman faces discipline. SI reported first-time player verbal fines exceed $33,500 and cited two prior Ellison cases; the league has announced no action.
