Mayfield Dislocates Thumb in Buccaneers' Loss

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb late in Tampa Bay’s 23-16 loss to Minnesota, coach Todd Bowles said. Mayfield was injured when linebacker Blake Cashman hit him as he threw an intercepted pass on fourth down. X-rays showed no fracture, and Mayfield is scheduled for an MRI; his availability for Tampa Bay’s next game remains uncertain pending further evaluation. He completed 17 of 34 passes for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception before leaving, with rookie Jalon Daniels taking over for the Buccaneers’ final possession. The loss dropped Tampa Bay to 0-3.

Daniels coming in cold probably sealed the loss, though Mayfield needs to hang onto the ball instead of forcing throws under pressure.
