Michigan Benches Underwood, Turns to Freshman Carr
Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham benched starting quarterback Bryce Underwood in the second half against Penn State after the sophomore completed 5 of 11 passes for 43 yards and threw two interceptions; Michigan had 80 first-half yards and trailed 3-0. True freshman Tommy Carr took over, and his first drive ended in a punt. Michigan scored shortly afterward when Bryson Kuzdzal ran 43 yards for a touchdown. The move came amid a sluggish season for Underwood, the former top national recruit, who had thrown six interceptions in six starts as Michigan’s offense struggled. Carr, a little-used backup and grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, had previously appeared mainly in a blowout win over UTEP.
