Padres closer Miller misses do-or-die Game 3
The San Diego Padres will play elimination Game 3 of the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers without closer Mason Miller. MLB placed him on the postseason paternity list Tuesday after his wife Jordan went into labor that afternoon, announcing the move less than an hour before first pitch. The list requires at least one day away and allows up to three. Left-hander Wandy Peralta was activated in his place. Miller is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA, three walks and four strikeouts in 2 2/3 postseason innings. He took the Game 2 loss after walking three in the ninth and allowing Jackson Chourio's game-winning single in a 4-3 defeat. In the regular season he went 5-2 with a 1.67 ERA, tied for the NL lead with 38 saves, and finished 57 games over 66 appearances. Peralta was 3-3 with a 3.61 ERA in 65 games. First baseman Gavin Sheets was scratched from the Game 3 lineup with neck stiffness. Core facts are uncontested across the record. The Brewers lead the best-of-five 2-0 and can clinch Tuesday night. If San Diego extends the series, Game 4 would be Wednesday in San Diego and a potential Game 5 Friday in Milwaukee; Miller can return after one to three days on the list.
