Report: Cora Declines Phillies’ 2027 Job
Alex Cora has declined the Philadelphia Phillies’ managerial job for a second time and plans to sit out the 2027 season, reportedly because of family considerations. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski had made Cora, with whom he won the 2018 World Series in Boston, his top choice. The Phillies must decide whether to remove the interim tag from Don Mattingly or conduct a wider search; Mattingly went 79-55 after replacing Rob Thomson before Philadelphia was eliminated by Atlanta in the wild-card round. Mattingly remains under contract as bench coach through 2027, and an expected December owners’ lockout could complicate a managerial hire. Cora remains under contract with Boston through 2027.
