Phillies Executive Bill Giles Dies at 92

Bill Giles died Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, at age 92 at his home in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. The Phillies announced the death prior to Friday's game against the Rays. Hired in 1969, organized the 1981 purchase group, served as president until 1997, and remained chairman and chairman emeritus until 2015. The team won NL pennants in 1983 and 1993 during his tenure and World Series titles in 1980 and 2008. In 1978 he told Dave Raymond to try on the Phillie Phanatic costume; he also helped bring Harry Kalas and Pete Rose to Philadelphia and later helped open Citizens Bank Park. His father, Warren Giles, entered the Hall of Fame in 1979. John Middleton said, "The Phillies family lost an icon today," adding that Giles helped reshape the franchise into a highly visible entertainment and business operation. Ruben Amaro Jr. said, "We loved Bill," and "We loved him so much we called him 'Uncle Bill.'" Amaro said Giles started the family atmosphere of being a Phillie and that "Bill will always be a Phillies fan."
