Padres Trail 0-2; Manager Denies Miller Tipped Pitches
The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the San Diego Padres 4-3 in Game 2 of the NL Division Series on Jackson Chourio's two-out, two-strike, two-run single in the ninth, leaving San Diego down 0-2. Closer Mason Miller threw a clean 12-pitch eighth before issuing three walks in the ninth—his first three postseason walks—and finished with 21 of 40 pitches for strikes. Christian Yelich stole second during the inning. Manager Craig Stammen on Monday at Petco Park dismissed pitch-tipping speculation, saying staff monitor pitchers and opponents daily, the internet can go too far, and the Padres feel good about their process and are not really worried. Per Alden Gonzalez of ESPN, Stammen said tipping has mostly shown when Miller works more than one inning and may need a playoff adjustment. Gary Sanchez told Gonzalez that even if Miller tipped, hitting 104 is not easy. Miller said he did not do his job and the series is not over. Manny Machado said the club has overcome backs-against-the-wall adversity before and will again. Nick Pivetta faces Dustin May in Game 3. Teams down 0-2 in a Division Series have won 10 of 93.
