DNA Identifies Ex-Chicago Detective in 1960 Murder
Chicago police say DNA evidence and genetic genealogy, along with preserved fingerprint and other forensic evidence, linked former homicide detective Thomas F. McInerney to the 1960 abduction and murder of eight-year-old Gloria Kowalewicz. Gloria disappeared while walking to church and was found shot in a wooded area. McInerney was a 24-year-old police officer at the time, served on the department for 28 years, and died in 2006, so he was never prosecuted or held accountable in court. Investigators have not established why he targeted her.
