Multiple Injured in Bend School Shooting; Suspect Dead
On Oct. 15, 2026, a shooting struck Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. Police received a 12:59 p.m. 911 call about shots fired into a car, then multiple calls of an active shooter inside. Alerted at 1 p.m., officers arrived about 1:02 p.m. and found the 16-year-old male suspect already shot and killed. They evacuated the school room by room. Medics transported at least two people to the hospital. Students and staff were bused to a reunification center at Journey Church. The FBI is assisting the investigation. A preliminary law enforcement source told CNN that four people were killed, three children and one adult. Police had earlier reported multiple victims and at least two hospitalized. Bend police spokesperson Sheila Miller said authorities did not have confirmation who shot the suspect and that it may have been a bystander. Superintendent Steven Cook said the community was stunned and heartbroken by the senseless tragedy. Sen. Ron Wyden asked how many schools must be shot up before Republicans agree to act to curb gun violence. Rep. Janelle Bynum said children are supposed to do arts and crafts, not use desks as cover from gunfire. Sen. Jeff Merkley said no one should have to fear violence at school. FBI Director Kash Patel said every needed resource would be made available. The full casualty count and conditions, and who killed the suspect, remained unresolved.
