NATO Fund Targets Drone, Space Surveillance Gaps
The 1 billion euro ($1.12 billion) NATO Innovation Fund, backed by 24 NATO nations, is expanding into Poland with plans for a Warsaw presence, per Oct 13, 2026 reporting. Ari Jonsson told Reuters the most pressing needs are technologies that detect, track and neutralize drones as well as space-based intelligence and reconnaissance. "We have seen drone incursions into countries here to an extent that is not being seen elsewhere," Jonsson said. "That really creates a different mindset when it comes to threats that you can actually see." The fund is looking beyond traditional defence contractors. Andrzej Domanski said the NATO Innovation Fund is the first major fund not originating from Poland to establish a substantial presence in the country. Separately, NATO's top commander in Europe described a potential strategy built around drone swarms, autonomous systems and rapid targeting-information sharing.
