Zelensky warns Russia may launch massive Ukraine strike
Volodymyr Zelensky opened his nightly video address on the night of October 6, 2026 with updated intelligence already in hand. The same message went out on Telegram. “There is updated intelligence indicating that Russia is preparing a massive attack,” he said. “Ukrainian services and our air force are ready to respond to the extent permitted by our available means of defence.”
He asked the country to treat every missile-threat alert as real and to take shelter when the signals sounded. He gave no hour for the strike. Services were prepared to answer, but only inside the defenses already on hand.
More than 650 drones had flown toward the Moscow region overnight from October 5 into October 6. It was the largest aerial attack on the Moscow region in two years. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported the wave as it closed on the capital area. Russian air defenses destroyed 105 of them near the city itself. On Tuesday morning they brought down another 68.

A fire broke out at the Volodarsk Linear Production and Dispatch Center near Konstantinovo, a major oil facility. Governor Andrei Vorobyov said at least one person had been killed and six injured in the strikes across the surrounding region.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported a still higher interception total: nearly 900 Ukrainian drones stopped overnight across multiple regions, Crimea, and the Sea of Azov. Long-range drones fielded by Ukraine now reach deep into Russian territory.
Ukraine’s defense ministry said long-range strikes on refineries in Moscow, Yaroslavl, Ust-Luga, Perm, Saratov, and Syzran had disabled 51 percent of Russia’s oil refining capacity. The claim stood without independent verification. Kyiv kept the energy strikes going even so, through repeated requests from U.S. president Donald Trump to halt them and through his renewed blame of Ukraine for high American gas prices.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha had already measured the stock on the other side of the defensive gap. Russia holds 600 ballistic missiles in reserve and can produce up to 140 per month.

Zelensky held a conference call with government officials, military leaders, and the heads of the key agencies. The defense minister and the air force commander reported on the deployment of air-defense systems and the organization of defensive lines around designated key facilities. The necessary ammunition for the F-16 fighter jets was being provided, along with interception systems and the means to stop drones and cruise missiles. Government officials working with regional authorities had prepared additional logistical solutions in response to the Russian operation against Ukrainian logistics. Deadlines were set for a significant part of the tasks. The highest-priority measures were already being implemented.
“We received updated intelligence today regarding the russians' preparations for a massive strike. We are preparing a countermeasure,” Zelensky said. “The most difficult issue is defending against ballistic missiles, and the availability of these supplies depends entirely on our partners. We are working with them daily.”
The war was already years deep. It opened in 2014 with Russia’s occupation of Crimea and the fighting it backed in the Donbas, then widened into the full-scale invasion of February 2022. What remained was a grinding European conflict in which long-range drones and missiles let Ukraine hit far inside Russian territory while Russia turned urban air attack into a regular instrument against cities.

The tools on Ukraine’s side of that sky were changing. Air force spokesperson Yuri Ignat said robotic turrets were being installed on bridges to meet Russia’s newer jet-powered drones. The mounts used optical vision and artificial intelligence to remove the human factor and deliver the strike. There had already been shoot-downs, including of the bigger and faster models.
At least 13 people were killed and 104 injured in Russian attacks across Ukraine in the 24 hours before October 6. A hospital was hit in Kryvyi Rih. Between September 25 and October 2, at least 16 people were killed and more than 100 injured in the Kyiv region, according to a Kyiv Independent count. On September 25, drone strikes during working hours wounded 59.
“A great deal depends on our partners, on every leader and every country in the world that has the defensive capabilities we need and can provide them to us,” Zelensky said. “It is critically important that there be the political will to do so, particularly in the United States, in Europe and among our other partners.” “The world is bigger than Russian evil, and protecting lives must be a common cause.”
A fire broke out on the Turkish-owned freighter Royal Mammadov in the Black Sea, outside Romania’s territorial waters. The vessel was carrying corn. Romanian authorities reported that the ship sank and that eleven crew members were rescued. Azerbaijani and Indian citizens had been aboard. Zelensky attributed the fire to Russian drones. “A horrific strike by two Russian drones on a civilian vessel in neutral waters carrying corn and owned by Türkiye. Azerbaijani and Indian citizens were on board,” he said. The captain was killed. The fate of one other person was still being established.
