Zelensky Offers Elections for 60-Day Ceasefire
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an Oct. 11, 2026 ABC News This Week interview that Ukraine will organize elections if Russia agrees to a 60-day total ceasefire. He answered U.S. President Donald Trump, who said it is time for Ukraine to get a new president and suggested they get a new leader who can make a deal. Zelensky said to tell Putin to give two months of total ceasefire and Ukraine will organize elections, adding it is up to the Ukrainian people to choose their leader and that Ukraine will be ready for their choice. Zelensky's regular term expired May 20, 2024, and remains extended under martial law, which bars elections. He said Russia attacked 190 energy facilities and killed 153 civilians in one week, and offered to halt strikes on Russian oil if Russia stops attacking Ukrainian energy. He said some cannot find the key to stop Putin and that it is easier to pressure others. shelter.in.ua dates Trump's remarks to Oct. 10, 2026; Reuters describes them as Saturday. Russia had not publicly responded.
