Reports: Netanyahu Declined Pre-Oct. 7 Hamas Strikes

Channel 12 reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was warned weeks before the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that Israel could target Hamas leaders, but declined to authorize strikes and instead directed officials to explore Qatari-funded economic benefits for Hamas in exchange for calm. Separately, U.S. military planners have developed options for renewed strikes on Iran, potentially using the non-nuclear GBU-43/B MOAB against energy infrastructure and nuclear-related sites, including Pickaxe Mountain; officials question whether it could damage deeply buried facilities or help achieve strategic aims, and have warned of civilian risks. Reports differ on whether President Donald Trump and Netanyahu discussed restarting large-scale operations; the White House denies they discussed resuming the war and says Trump will not authorize an attack before the November 3 U.S. midterms. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Central Command leaders reportedly favor strikes, while most of Trump’s advisers prefer sanctions and other economic pressure; Iran has escalated its rhetoric and is reportedly changing tactics to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Israel has threatened to expand its security zone in southern Lebanon, including near Nabatieh and the Litani River, if Hezbollah joins a war against Israel, while officials have warned that renewed fighting or Iranian retaliation could disrupt Israel’s October 27 election.
