Iran Says US Response to Hormuz Terms Insufficient
On Sunday, Iran security chief Mohsen Rezaei told state media the US response to Tehran's seven conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz was insufficient. He said the strait would not open and no talks would occur until the conditions are met. The UN General Assembly plan could restore normal passage within seven days if those terms are met. Washington replied through Qatari intermediaries, with contact also via Pakistan and Iraq. The White House did not immediately respond. Rezaei said the US accepted some conditions while others remain unclear, and that Iran is no longer responding directly to the Americans. Reported conditions include lifting the naval blockade, easing oil sanctions, restoring a regional ceasefire, and resuming nuclear talks within a week. A Reuters-briefed official said the dispute is over sequencing, not the components. Qalibaf restated the seven conditions on October 4. At a Clarksville, Tennessee rally on Saturday, President Trump said Iran is "sort of calming down," may act before the November 3 elections, and that the US "could end it really quick." A Thursday X post said discussions are "productive," the blockade stays, and "IRAN WILL NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!" Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told diplomats Iran is "more prepared than before" if the US returns to military solutions.
