Palestinian Elections Postponed to September 2027
Mahmoud Abbas has postponed Palestinian legislative elections scheduled for November 28, 2026, and set September 11, 2027, for legislative and presidential polls. Palestinian officials cited worsening political, security and economic conditions, including Israeli military activity and movement restrictions, settler violence, difficulties holding a vote in Gaza and East Jerusalem, and billions of dollars in Palestinian revenues withheld by Israel. They said conditions for free, fair and inclusive elections had not materialized, and Israeli restrictions on election preparations were also reported. Palestinians have not held national legislative elections since 2006 or a presidential election since 2005, leaving Abbas in power without a renewed electoral mandate. Some Palestinian factions have called for further dialogue and reconciliation before voting.
