Senate Map Shifts as Kansas Race Tightens
The Cook Political Report moved Kansas’s 2026 Senate race from Lean Republican to a toss-up, New Hampshire to Lean Democrat and North Carolina to Likely Democrat, estimating Democrats could gain two to six Senate seats—within the four-seat net gain needed for control. Polls show Democrat Adam Hamilton tied with Republican Sen. Roger Marshall in Kansas, while Democrats lead in Texas and Alaska and have an edge in Ohio; Republicans narrowly lead in Iowa. Republican groups have shifted advertising resources from North Carolina toward Kansas as the race tightens. Dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran war and the economy, including high costs affecting rural voters, is contributing to Democratic gains and apparent crossover support, though polls may undercount the GOP’s strongest supporters. Separately, Democrats could use the 2026 governor contests to end Republicans’ long-held numerical advantage, but both parties remain competitive across the 36 races.
