Michigan GOP Senate Candidate Rogers Seeks End to Canada Tariff Fight
On Oct. 7, 2026, Mike Rogers posted an X ad filmed in a bar with a Labatt. "Drinking a Labatt and watching the Red Wings, man, it just doesn't get any more Michigan than that," he said, adding Canada is not Michigan's enemy and the tariff war must end now. He pledged bipartisan action in the Senate to lower costs. Trump imposed Canadian tariffs in July 2026, effective August; Canada retaliated. Rogers called the tariffs "necessary" in September and two weeks earlier reversed on the Iran war. Trump told reporters Rogers wanted Canada to make a deal and said Canada behaves very badly. Democrat Abdul El-Sayed posted that Rogers must have had one too many Labatts, cheerled the war from the start, and is flip-flopping as polls fall. Joey Hannum, Jessica Tarlov, Catherine Rampell, Frank Luntz and others shared criticism and old Rogers tariff clips. HuffPost calls Rogers a senator; Reuters a Senate candidate. Polling is cast as a narrow El-Sayed lead or neck-and-neck. A same-day Reuters review found two-thirds of GOP candidates in competitive races have broken with or distanced from Trump this year. Midterms are next month.
