San Antonio has filed a federal lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security to stop conversion of an East Side warehouse into an ICE detention and processing facility planned to hold as many as 1,500 people. ICE bought the warehouse for $66.1 million. The city seeks completion of an environmental review required under the National Environmental Policy Act and says the review should assess socioeconomic impacts on the surrounding urban area, not only environmental effects. The filing does not challenge the federal government’s authority to enforce immigration laws. San Antonio joins other local governments pursuing similar legal challenges to proposed ICE facilities. The city says federal officials failed to coordinate with it. Some council members have raised concerns about the cost and likelihood of success. WOAI reports the lawsuit asks a judge to void the property purchase and construction contract.
What each side asserts, disputes — or leaves out entirely.

“WOAI - San Antonio News”East Side neighborhoods should have input on something this large, so the lawsuit forcing DHS to follow the rules makes sense.
The city has a point about coordination, but blocking needed ICE capacity over paperwork feels like unnecessary obstruction of federal enforcement.
San Antonio is right to demand the full environmental review before DHS converts that warehouse into a 1500 person detention site.
