Mamdani demands ICE halt New York operations after shooting
An ICE agent shot and wounded 28-year-old Oscar Belgal during a federal enforcement operation in Marble Hill, northern Manhattan. A five-year-old child in the car was reported physically unharmed. DHS said agents were trying to arrest Belgal over a prior grand-larceny conviction and other arrests; he was taken to a hospital before being placed in ICE custody. Mayor Zohran Mamdani demanded that ICE halt operations in New York City and said talks with President Donald Trump to secure Belgal's release were unsuccessful. Governor Kathy Hochul urged a pause in enforcement and called for body-camera footage to be released. The shooting prompted protests. WIRED reported allegations about the agent's conduct in other arrests. Outlets do not dispute that the agent shot Belgal or that he was wounded and later held by ICE. Still unresolved in the record are the full on-scene sequence, any body-camera video, the status of the agent's other-arrest allegations, and whether ICE will change its New York operations.
