Protests Erupt Outside NYC Hospital After ICE Shoots Man

On Thursday an ICE agent shot a man referred to as Belgal during a targeted enforcement operation in the Manhattan/Marble Hill area. Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani said a five-year-old child was in the car. The man was taken to a Manhattan hospital. Around 11 p.m., ICE agents drove him away in unmarked vehicles. Hundreds of protesters surrounded the hospital, shouted as the vehicles left, and continued demonstrating into the night on nearby streets. Police arrested four protesters on obstructing governmental administration charges and issued court appearance tickets. Mamdani said he spent two hours on the phone with President Trump and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin seeking the man's release and that the talks failed. In a statement that night he said ICE shot a New Yorker with his child in the car, that ICE makes the city less safe, and that the city wants them out now. DHS said the operation targeted a man from the Dominican Republic alleged to be living in the United States illegally. Outlets differ on whether the scene was Manhattan, Marble Hill, or the Bronx. Where Belgal was taken after leaving the hospital was not immediately clear.
