Rural Voters Divided Over Trump Immigration Crackdown
Rural voters are divided over the effects of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown: an AP-KFF survey found about one-third said enforcement benefited their community, about one-third said it harmed their community, and roughly three in 10 saw no impact. Rural supporters of Trump’s MAGA movement were especially likely to report benefits, while many voters also say immigrants are important to local economies and believe enforcement has gone too far. Laura Leigh Taylor, a Georgia farmer who voted for Trump in 2024, said a friend’s father was deported despite supporting his family; she regrets her vote and says the issue may lead her to support Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in November. The poll also found rural voters are less likely than Americans overall to say Trump has gone too far on immigration, even as immigration remains an important issue for midterm candidates.
