Hurricane Isaias Targets Florida Panhandle, Alabama
Hurricane Isaias, the first Atlantic hurricane of 2026, had sustained winds of about 80–85 mph on Oct. 8, and forecasters expected it to strengthen to a high-end Category 2 before reaching the Gulf Coast late Friday or early Saturday. The projected landfall area spans the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama, where dangerous storm surge of 5–7 feet, hurricane-force winds, heavy rain and flash flooding are possible; officials urged residents to finish preparations and follow evacuation orders. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency for 40 counties. Isaias is expected to weaken inland, but its remnants could bring rain to parts of the Southeast and Southern New England; Wilmington, North Carolina, could also see heavy rain, minor tidal flooding, dangerous surf and isolated tornadoes. Areas outside the projected track may still face hazardous rip currents and some minor coastal flooding.
