Category 3 Hurricane Polo nears Baja California landfall Monday

Hurricane Polo is a Category 3 major hurricane with 125 mph sustained winds nearing Baja California Sur landfall Monday under a hurricane warning. NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft confirmed the storm structure. Authorities closed beaches in San Jose del Cabo amid large waves and ordered evacuations, port closures and school cancellations along Mexico's Pacific coast. KHQ reports central pressure fell to 892 millibars after an 88-millibar drop in less than 24 hours, one of the top three historic rapid-intensification Pacific hurricanes. Anadolu cites AccuWeather forecasting Category 1 at landfall; Pickhardt expects major intensity until the coast and waves up to 12 meters. Pickhardt locates Polo near 21.9N 114.1W moving north at 10 knots as of 2100 UTC Sept 27, with hurricane-force winds extending up to 40 nm and gale-force up to 90 nm. Anadolu places it about 200 miles off moving north-northwest at 12 mph as of 11 a.m. EDT Sunday. Rainfall estimates differ, KHQ at up to 12 inches in Mexico and Anadolu at 4 to 8 inches in Baja California.
