Trump teases move on near-record diesel prices
President Donald Trump said Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, after a call with Vladimir Putin, that Russia agreed to supply over 300,000 tons of diesel immediately to the American and global marketplace, 500,000 tons in November, 1 million tons immediately thereafter, and 3 million more within a short period. He posted it on Truth Social shortly before 3 p.m. ET. Diesel futures fell about 4.5% to $4.67 a gallon. The U.S. Treasury issued a temporary license allowing Russian diesel into global markets. Kirill Dmitriev said Russia-US cooperation on diesel and energy will benefit the world. Trump called lower prices for Americans, especially farmers, ranchers, and truckers, his greatest priority. CONTESTED: Wire accounts reported national average diesel at $6.28 a gallon; Al Jazeera cited AAA at $6.27, down $0.10 from a week earlier and up $5.94 from a month earlier. Euronews said the White House did not clarify who would pay or when supplies would arrive. Trump had signed sweeping Russia energy sanctions about a month earlier, and the U.S. has not imported Russian oil or gas since 2022. It remains unclear how fast the fuel could reach buyers with Russia's diesel export ban in place through October. The news followed a G7 deal a week earlier to release 100 million barrels and Ukraine claims that strikes took more than half of Russia's refining capacity offline.
