North Korea Fires Another Projectile Toward East Sea

North Korea fired missiles from near Pyongyang toward the East Sea on Monday, South Korea's military said. The Joint Chiefs of Staff reported a flight of about 900 km. Japan's Defense Ministry detected two launches that fell outside Japan's exclusive economic zone into the Sea of Japan. Seoul said it had stepped up surveillance for more launches and was sharing information with the United States and Japan. Japan described two ballistic missiles; South Korean statements used both "unidentified projectile" and "ballistic missiles." TASS and Jerusalem Post put the time at about 9:20 a.m. local; MK.co.kr quoted the JCS at about 9:20 p.m. Monday's firing was North Korea's fourth in about a month. It followed an Oct. 3 test state media called an intermediate-range strategic missile overseen by Kim Jong Un; Seoul measured over 700 km and North Korea claimed 1,000 km. The North has tested missiles on more than 10 occasions this year. Days earlier South Korea ran a demining operation after a border mine blast wounded three of its soldiers, which Seoul blamed on the North. North Korea's Foreign Ministry said Seoul sought to "shift the blame for its own accident onto us" and warned of retaliation if territory were violated.
