Two Latvians Arrested After RAF Molesworth Breach
Two Latvian men, aged 32 and 36 and living in the UK, were arrested inside RAF Molesworth around 2 a.m. Thursday. A Ministry of Defence Police patrol found an abandoned vehicle near the perimeter and a small fence breach; the men were found inside the base and taken to a Cambridgeshire station. They were first held on suspicion of trespass and criminal damage, then re-arrested under the National Security Act 2023 on suspicion of entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK. Counter Terrorism Policing London leads the case. Police searched two Peterborough-area addresses about 30 km away. Bomb disposal officers checked the vehicle and lifted the cordon after finding nothing of concern. Commander Helen Flanagan said there is nothing to suggest this incident is connected to the events at RAF Fairford last week and that investigators are keeping an open mind on motivation. Defence minister Wes Streeting said the government is highly vigilant about potential threats to military sites. A US Air Force spokesperson said they remain in close coordination with UK partners. RAF Molesworth hosts US intelligence centres for Europe and Africa and a NATO hub; it is not used for flying. Motive is unestablished. Some outlets note timing after Fairford; officials say no evidence currently links the incidents.
