Trudy Strengthens to Category 3 Near Mexico

Hurricane Trudy rapidly intensified into a Category 3 major hurricane, with sustained winds near 120 mph, and was forecast to approach Mexico’s southwestern and west-central coast Saturday night into Sunday, possibly strengthening further before weakening. Hurricane and tropical-storm alerts were in effect along parts of the coast, and the storm’s precise track was expected to determine local impacts. Forecasts called for 4 to 8 inches of rain, with isolated totals near 12 inches, in Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco, raising the risk of life-threatening flooding and mudslides; storm surge, large waves and dangerous surf were also expected.
