South Dakota Deputy Dies After Line-of-Duty Shooting

Minnehaha County Deputy Katherine Ann Frank, 26, died Monday after being shot during an exchange of gunfire at a home in Sioux Falls the previous Friday. The suspect, 39-year-old Brandon Oetken, faces three counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and three counts of aggravated assault; officials said the charges may be amended. Frank joined the sheriff’s office in 2024 after working at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Sheriff Mike Milstead and other officials honored her service, while colleagues and community members mourned her at memorials in Sioux Falls. A fundraiser organized by the Minnehaha County Deputies Association is collecting donations for her family.
