Schumer regains trust as midterms shape leadership
Chuck Schumer has regained support among many Senate Democrats after last year’s backlash over his vote to keep the government funded, and he says he will seek another term as the party’s leader. Democrats are hopeful of making gains in November despite a difficult Senate map, and colleagues expect Schumer to win reelection as leader if they add seats; a Democratic majority would make that outcome especially likely. His position is not assured, however: some candidates have called for fresh leadership or declined to back him, and significant losses could revive questions about his future.
