Thousands Protest Trump’s Kennedy Center Overhaul

Thousands formed a human chain around the Kennedy Center on Sept. 18 at Hands Around the Kennedy Center, run by Hands Off the Arts. Crowds waved "hands off Kennedy Center" and "Donny, you are no JFK" signs; some in costumes booed Trump's name. It followed his 2025 board takeover, a June order removing his name, and a board vote to close the main building for up to two years of renovations. Judge Christopher Cooper required 30 days' notice before major physical changes. CONTESTED: From the Oval Office, Trump said only his administration could save the center, had secured $257 million for repairs, and asked why "if we get no recognition." Neal Racioppo said "It makes me sick to my stomach" and Trump "can't get his name on this cherished building, so he is depriving the world of what it could be." Lizzy Andrew said he "does not have a right to decide that an institution, a living memorial to a past president, can be demolished." A spokesperson said 2025 willow removals were a safety hazard; Matthew Floca said "I think that a weeping cherry tree would be perfect." The Washington Post reported ticket declines, boycotts, and donor flight. Demolition status stays unresolved under the notice order.
