Haunted-Site Rankings Catalog Thousands Across States
Texas’ transportation department has added a “Phantom Layer” to its statewide planning map, highlighting haunted sites, cryptid sightings and folklore; Lubbock’s entry is the cemetery where Buddy Holly is buried, linked to a local legend about an angel statue. Separately, HauntBound’s 2026 index ranks more than 6,000 supposedly haunted places using decades of published accounts, with state counts of 156 in Illinois, 100 in Alabama and 181 in Georgia. Its state features spotlight reported paranormal activity at places including Illinois’ Peoria State Hospital and Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery, Alabama’s Redmont Hotel and Cry Baby Hollow Bridge, and Georgia’s Rhodes Hall and Fox Theatre. The accounts describe alleged apparitions and other unexplained experiences, while the index does not establish that the places are actually haunted.
