Ja Morant’s Blazers Role Takes Shape
Portland opened the preseason 3-0, with Ja Morant showing signs he can adapt to a crowded backcourt and a reduced role. In a win over Sacramento, he came off the bench and had 14 points and six assists without a turnover, while coach Micah Nori continues to test the team’s four-guard rotation. Morant has also appeared willing to prioritize fitting in and defense, though the fit still raises questions about spacing and size. His preseason has not been uniformly smooth: against Golden State he had eight points, five assists and four turnovers, with visible rust after playing only 20 games last season. Teammates and his father have described him as happier in Portland, while Morant is reportedly mindful of how his behavior is scrutinized. Portland’s strong rim protection from Donovan Clingan and Robert Williams III has also helped support the roster’s guard-heavy approach.
