FAA Reverses Closure, Keeps Indianapolis Heliport Open
The FAA has reversed its 2024 approval to close the Indianapolis Downtown Heliport, keeping the 5-acre site available for aviation despite plans to redevelop it, including a proposed soccer stadium. The decision followed Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita’s appeal, which argued the heliport’s infrastructure could support emergency medical, law enforcement, military and future aviation operations and preserve taxpayer investment. The airport authority had cited the cost of operating the facility and declining use; it is reviewing the FAA’s determination. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett’s administration opposed the reversal, saying it conflicts with the city’s goals and residents’ interests.
