Erie, Pennsylvania shooter killed 8 people, then himself, police say
Nine people are dead after a shooting Friday night in Erie, Pennsylvania. City officials said the shooter is deceased and the public faces no ongoing threat. All nine deaths occurred before officers arrived. Officers reached the scene within minutes of a ShotSpotter alert and no additional shots were fired after they got there. Police investigated the scene on Oct. 9. Gov. Josh Shapiro spoke with Erie Mayor Daria Devlin and offered his administration's full support. On X he wrote: "My heart breaks for this family." He added: "Lori and I are praying for their loved ones and the entire Erie community." Officials set a 4 p.m. news conference Saturday. Erie is about 128 miles north of Pittsburgh. CONTESTED: NBC News describes the shooter as killing eight people then himself. City officials reported nine people dead and a deceased shooter but did not specify whether the shooter was included in the death toll. That count remains unresolved ahead of the Saturday briefing.
