Man seriously injured after entering Yorkshire zoo tiger enclosure
A man entered a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster on Saturday. South Yorkshire Police said reports arrived at 1.35pm and that a tiger attacked him, resulting in serious injury. The tiger remained contained. The park evacuated visitors and said emergency response procedures were activated at once. Yorkshire Ambulance Service sent two land ambulances, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and a doctor. The park, open since 2009 with its Land of the Tigers section added in 2011, houses endangered Amur tigers in a purpose-built two-acre reserve with a high elevated visitor walkway and fencing above. It said it closed and would stay closed Sunday while working with authorities to ascertain what happened. CONTESTED: The Guardian reported the man died after jumping into the enclosure and was pronounced dead at the scene. That conflicts with the police statement of serious injury and with other outlets' serious-injury framing. A police spokesman said officers were working at pace to contact the man's family and would give no further detail at that time. Footage circulated online; police asked the public not to share it. Witnesses reported hearing shots, but suggestions the sounds came from gas canisters or tranquilliser darts have not been confirmed.
