Tesla Shares Rise After Rocket-Boosted Roadster Reveal
Tesla demonstrated a Roadster prototype at a SpaceX facility in Texas, driving upside down on a curved ramp with underbody suction before using cold-gas thrusters to flip, rise briefly into the air and land. Tesla executives touted acceleration from zero to 60 mph in under a second and a top speed above 230 mph, though the claims and capabilities remain unverified for production vehicles. Tesla says production is planned for 2028; reservations have been listed at $50,000 for the Performance version and $250,000 for the Thrust version, but the company has not disclosed a final price, and the invite-only thruster-equipped version is not approved for public-road use. Aviation oversight and possible licensing requirements could pose further regulatory hurdles, while questions remain about whether the features will reach customers or prove practical and safe. Tesla shares rose about 5% in premarket trading after the unveiling.
