About influenza vaccine
Influenza vaccines, colloquially known as flu shots or, in British English, flu jabs, are vaccines that reduce the risk of symptomatic infection and severe influenza disease caused by influenza viruses among those vaccinated. New versions of the vaccine are developed twice annually, as the influenza viruses against which vaccine offers protection rapidly evolve. Although their effectiveness varies from year to year, most offer moderate to strong protection against influenza. Vaccination against influenza began in the 1930s, with large-scale availability in the United States beginning in 1945.
