New Jersey Releases Fatal Atlantic City Shooting Footage

New Jersey’s Attorney General’s Office released body-camera footage of the June 2 fatal shooting of 52-year-old Donald Gardner during a search-warrant operation at his Atlantic City home. The footage and officials’ account show officers announcing themselves and using a mechanical device to force open the door after someone inside closed it; Gardner then fired at the officers. Two officers were injured—one in the leg and another when a projectile struck his helmet—before Atlantic City Officer Robert Reynolds returned fire, killing Gardner. A gun was recovered at the home, and the state investigation is ongoing, with its findings to be presented to a grand jury as required by law.
