France School Shooting Wounds Two, Grazes Another; Teen Arrested
A 14-year-old was arrested Monday after a shooting at Joseph-Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, near Marseille. The principal and a teacher were wounded and a third person grazed; officials said those injuries were not life-threatening. Mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari said the pupil, who goes to the school, entered with a rifle, fired twice in a corridor toward the principal and a teacher, and was disarmed by a supervisor before police arrived. BFM TV reported the rifle was allegedly hidden in a guitar case. A Metro source said the 53-year-old head teacher was shot in the right hip by a shotgun and a 37-year-old teacher was struck in the thigh by ricocheting shot, using 12-gauge ammunition. Education Minister Edouard Geffray called the act further evidence of rising unchecked violence that society must stand against. Police said the middle school was not tied to recent high school protests. Ministers were en route. Motive and further suspect details were not released. CONTESTED: none identified on the core events. Outlets variously called the weapon a hunting rifle or shotgun; guitar-case and wound details came from BFM TV and a Metro source.
