US Plans Livestreamed Hasan Firing-Squad Execution
The Pentagon says Nidal Malik Hasan will be executed by firing squad on Dec. 3 at Fort Hood, Texas, and that it will be livestreamed. Hasan killed 13 people on Nov. 5, 2009 after shouting "Allahu akbar." President Donald Trump approved the method after Pete Hegseth recommended it. It would be the first U.S. military execution since 1961 and the first by firing squad since 1945. Hasan was sentenced to death in 2013 and is held at Fort Leavenworth among four military death-row inmates. Hegseth said, "We'll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it's public," with soldiers and rifles on the squad. A War Department official said, "It will be livestreamed. Details will follow." Sean Parnell said, "Judgment day for Hasan has finally come." Hegseth, asked about final requests, said, "Don't care. We'll see him on December 3." Eugene R. Fidell said, "It frankly might outlast the current administration, and who knows if the next one will have the same penchant for executions." Deborah Denno said livestreaming "could possibly be a good idea because it would be transparent." CONTESTED: Fox News reports 32 wounded; Metro reports 31 or over 30. Livestream details and any delay from legal filings remain open.
