Newly Unsealed Footage Shows Mangione’s Pennsylvania Arrest
Newly unsealed body-camera footage from eight Altoona, Pennsylvania, police officers shows Luigi Mangione’s Dec. 9, 2024 arrest at a McDonald’s five days after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in Manhattan. Officers ask him to pull down his face mask and he complies; an officer outside says it is the suspect. Questioned about a fake ID bearing the name Mark Rosario, Mangione first denies then gives his real name. Officer Christy Wasser pulls a gun magazine wrapped in underwear from his backpack and smiles. At the station, officers recover a handgun, silencer, second magazine, a Faraday bag containing a cellphone, and a handwritten notebook prosecutors have called a manifesto. The release also shows Mangione strip-searched at the station. The footage was previously shown at a suppression hearing where the defense challenged the backpack search. Judge Gregory Carro excluded the magazine found at the McDonald’s and allowed the station evidence. Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in August, saying, “I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died.” His defense has sought dismissal of state murder charges on double-jeopardy grounds; a decision on the state case is pending.
