Nor’easter Brings Flooding, Wind and Travel Disruptions

A powerful nor’easter is battering the East Coast, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, dangerous surf and coastal flooding, with the worst conditions expected from New Jersey and Long Island through southern New England. Gusts have reached 64 mph on Nantucket, and large waves and flooding around high tides are expected to continue, heightened by the full moon; hazardous conditions may persist into Monday. Flooding has inundated streets in Alexandria, Virginia, and officials have warned residents in vulnerable coastal areas to avoid shorelines and flooded roads, move vehicles to higher ground and prepare for power outages. New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency; more than 100,000 customers were reported without power at one point, and over 400 flights were canceled, disrupting travel at airports including Boston, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Scituate officials warned that dangerous conditions could delay power restoration until Monday, while widespread event disruptions included the cancellation of two Ed Sheeran concerts at Gillette Stadium.
