Volvo Plans Nvidia Hands-Free Tech Across Lineup

On Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, Volvo announced it is expanding its decade-long partnership with Nvidia. The plan pairs Volvo’s safety systems with Nvidia’s Hyperion sensor-and-computing platform and Alpamayo driving software. Volvo describes a supervised Level 2-style system, also called Level 2++, meant to handle urban and highway driving and complex maneuvers while the driver stays responsible. Debut is set for a new model later this decade in Volvo’s largest product launch, then across the lineup rather than only higher-priced models, with launch targeted before 2030 in multiple regions at once, excluding China. The current setup will not include lidar, though that could change. Work with Nvidia began on the EX90 SUV, which uses the DRIVE Orin system-on-chip at over 250 TOPS and is positioned for hands-free Level 3 capability through over-the-air updates. Future models are to move to Nvidia’s DRIVE Thor chip by the end of the decade, at up to 1,000 TOPS. Volvo’s Zenseact subsidiary works on software, and Nvidia cloud AI infrastructure trains the models. Nvidia’s Ali Kani said the collaboration is about “making the stack safer,” tying the joint stack to a safety goal. Contested: none found. Prices are unset and the debut model is unnamed.
