Veteran college football coach Franchione dies at 75
Dennis Franchione, the longtime college football coach who led programs including TCU, Alabama, Texas A&M and Texas State, has died at 75. He spent 40 years coaching, including 30 as a head coach, and finished with a 213-135-2 record. At TCU, he helped revive a team coming off a 1-10 season, guiding the Horned Frogs to a 25-10 record over three seasons and paving the way for later success under Gary Patterson. He left for Alabama in 2001 and later coached five seasons at Texas A&M; his career also included stops at Kansas State, Pittsburg State, Southwestern College and New Mexico. Reports said Franchione had battled cancer for years, with the disease returning earlier this year.
