Three News Outlets Sue Over White House Ban

CNN, Politico and MS NOW said Monday they are filing suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia after the White House revoked their journalists' credentials. On Saturday those reporters were turned away from the grounds and had their passes taken. Trump announced the ban Friday at a photo-op, saying the outlets purposely write negative news based on cumulative stories over years, without citing specific pieces. Networks suspended pool coverage after the ban. WHCA president Jacqui Heinrich urged immediate restoration of access. Trump has also sued The New York Times and CBS. The dispute arrives ahead of the November midterms amid low Trump approval ratings, with emergency hearings possible this week. CONTESTED: Trump frames the ban as a response to outlets that purposely write negative news and as an assault on fake news that has grown like Cancer, a national-security threat; he says it is not an attack on the free press he cherishes. The three outlets say the White House revoked credentials without notice or process over objected-to reporting, threatening First Amendment rights. Jacqui Heinrich says excluding one outlet for coverage sets a standard that could later bar any outlet.
