Anthropic details extreme scenario for $44T US GDP by 2030
Jack Clark spoke at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok on October 17, 2026. Citing internal Anthropic economic models, the co-founder said one scenario sees U.S. GDP reaching about $44 trillion by 2030, up from just over $30 trillion. More moderate outcomes in the models reach $34.1 trillion or $36.3 trillion. Clark admitted the $44 trillion figure sounds very outlandish. He said it is implicated by the technology continuing to get better, and that if GDP were to grow this much, economic doctrine suggests that new industries and inventions would need to have been created to power such a major economic expansion. He cited risks of job displacement, including in customer service, loss of human control, and misuse in biological and cyber weapons. He called for international cooperation on AI rules. On the prior Monday at the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore, Shou Zi Chew said that in the next two to three years a real scientific breakthrough in physics, biotech, chemistry and material science is very possible because of AI.
