Emi Martinez Stretchered Off After Head Clash
Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 with Pedro Neto scoring both goals. Midway through the second half Emiliano Martinez and Jarrad Branthwaite collided at speed during a deep set piece as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall sized up a free-kick. Play stopped for several minutes. Martinez was stretchered off wearing a neck brace and receiving oxygen; he was conscious and taken to a Liverpool hospital. Branthwaite continued with minor facial cuts. Mike Penders came on for his Premier League debut. Chelsea led 1-0 through Neto when the injury occurred. The clean sheet was Chelsea's first since January 17, ending a 23-match run without one. It was Everton's first defeat of the season. Harrison Armstrong was booked for a tackle on Josh Acheampong. James Tarkowski shoved Moises Caicedo to the ground. Neto's first goal came from a Jorrel Hato cross. Contested: none found. No further medical details on Martinez were reported.
