Oregon Coach Dana Altman Retires After 16 Seasons
Dana Altman announced his retirement as Oregon men's basketball coach on Oct. 7, 2026, less than three weeks before the 2026-27 season. In 16 seasons he went 382-182, reached nine NCAA Tournaments including the 2017 Final Four and five Sweet 16s, and has 792 career wins. Last season Oregon finished 12-20 and 5-15 in the Big Ten. Tony Stubblefield, Altman's assistant for 13 seasons and former DePaul head coach, will be interim coach. The Ducks open Nov. 2 vs. Montana at Matthew Knight Arena. Jeff Goodman first reported the news for The Field of 68. Oregon released Altman's statement that this was one of two really tough decisions after leaving Creighton, that he loved every minute coaching there, and that stepping away is difficult and truly painful after almost five decades. Contested: none found in the record. Left-rated outlets stress the surprise so close to tipoff. No right-rated coverage is in the record. Stubblefield will address media via Zoom on Big Ten Media Day; Oregon will seek a permanent coach after the season.
