Judge dismisses Riley Gaines Title IX suit against NCAA over funding
A federal judge dismissed Riley Gaines and other female athletes’ Title IX lawsuit against the NCAA, ruling that the organization was not shown to receive federal financial assistance and therefore could not be sued under the law. The court did not decide whether the NCAA’s former transgender-athlete policies discriminated against women; the suit alleged those policies allowed biological males to compete in women’s events and use women’s locker rooms. Gaines and the Independent Council on Women’s Sports said they will appeal, with Gaines saying the case was intended ultimately to reach the U.S. Supreme Court. The NCAA said it invests in women’s sports and complies with President Donald Trump’s executive order, while ICONS criticized its response as offering no accountability.
