SpaceX Seeks $40 Billion for Nvidia Chips

SpaceX shares fell after hours on reports it is seeking $40 billion to buy Nvidia chips. The plan is about $10 billion in bank loans and $30 billion in investment-grade debt. Apollo Global Management is expected to lead, with Pimco among lenders in discussions. Closing is expected in 2027. Elon Musk said on an August earnings call that SpaceX will build entirely on Nvidia, calling the Vera Rubin architecture optimal and the best AI computer. An earlier pitch used a thin two-page memo. "How are we supposed to take this to the investment committee?" an unnamed source said. SpaceX closed 0.49% lower at $171.92 and fell 1.15% to $169.94 in extended trading, per Benzinga; other reports said it fell as much as 1.8% postmarket while Nvidia rose as much as 0.6%. SpaceX completed a $25 billion investment-grade bond issuance in June 2026 after a BBB rating following its $86 billion IPO. In August Nvidia partnered with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR on a $500 billion AI infrastructure financing platform. No contested claims identified in the record. Some reports say talks are early-stage and could end without a deal. SpaceX, Apollo, Nvidia and Pimco did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
